Create a DIY day spa

You don't need to spend hundreds visiting a day spa — it's easy to create your own day spa experience at home, just follow these steps.

1. Clear your schedule. Make a day of your DIY day spa and keep it free of commitments so you can spend a full day relaxing.

2. Remove interruptions. For a truly chilled-out experience, turn off mobiles and unplug phones. Calls, texts and e-mails can wait!

3. Prepare. Make your bathroom as tranquil as you can before you start. Burn some fragrant oils , heat it up (if it's a cold day) with a small heater and light some tea-light candles. Warm up a bathrobe in the dryer so it's nice and cosy to put on when you're done, and get your slippers out too. Have fancy towels hiding in the cupboard for guests? Get them out — now's a good time to use them.

4. Play some relaxing music. Whatever helps you to chill out is best for this occasion.

5. Sip herbal teas. Stress-busting blends include those made with chamomile. Skip caffeinated and sugary drinks — you want to feel calm, not wound up.

6. Lose the jewellery. Remove earrings, necklaces and rings and wash your make-up off. Pull your hair back and decide: bath or shower? If going the bath route, add in bath salts or oils. If opting for the shower, add a few drops of essential oils to each corner (the scents will rise with the steam).

7. After wetting your body, hop out of the stream/bath and get ready to exfoliate (staying in the water will just wash your product down the drain). Apply it all over your body, concentrating on drier areas such as feet, knees and elbows. You may want to try a long-handled body brush to exfoliate your back.

8. Rinse your skin and follow with a luxurious shower gel. Having a bath? Now's the time to soak and relax — lay back with a rolled-up towel under your neck and let your mind go.

9. Once you're out, slather on a rich moisturiser while your skin's still warm, and cover up with a robe and slippers or socks as well. Take things easy and don't rush back into the "real world".
